AGE GRACEFULLY, FINALLY? (May, 2003)
Maintaining body weight, a balanced diet with plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits, putting to use all parts and various systems of the body by doing regular enjoyable exercises, keeping oneself occupied with some post retirement meaningful fulfilling occupation and also freedom from financial worries are some of the aspects discussed in our earlier newsletters. Phase out destructive habits like tobacco chewing and smoking and alcohol either not at all or in moderation. Financial stability and keeping oneself occupied in some activity or other is one more thing to do.
And finally it is mind over body …
In a game of cricket or tennis or any other game of "physical skill", it is always question mental stamina; it is the power of mind over body. One who is mentally strong survives and scores over others. Similar mental stamina is also of paramount importance in the game of life. He who thinks he is old and weak and tends to act accordingly, ages very fast and does become old and weak and finally bedridden.
You are what you think you are; you are never too old for anything. You have to think "young" and do anything that you love to do. Never "say" that you are too old! Do all you can and you can do anything that your mind wants you to. If it is some activity which benefits others, like working as a volunteer in some social or charitable organisation, giving your time for the benefit of others, it would give you immense satisfaction and happiness.
Keeping mind fully occupied is one of the most vital factors in keeping your old age at bay. Deliberate and conscious attempt to maintain your social contacts, with your walking partners, your co workers in any setup you are connected with and nurturing your family ties by frequent visits by you and visitors to your home are vital to good health. Interaction with groups of young people and children are especially recommended.
Religion and spirituality:
Depending on your religious beliefs, you may profitably spend some time at regular intervals in such activities like visiting place of worship, listening to religious discourses or spend time in whatever other similar activities that you feel inclined to do even in the confines of your room. Activities like meditation, pranayama or breathing exercises and yoga, if practiced daily, maintain very good mental equanimity. If you have a philosophical and enquiry mind, trying to understand your own self or "Atman" by listening to learned "Gurus" and studying spiritual books will be highly rewarding.
If you do follow/practice all the details mentioned in our last 4 newletters, you will stand to benefit to more or less extent. It mainly depends on you. Nothing comes free in this world. You have to make a conscious and persistent effort to achieve anything in life.
So if you do try you can "Die young … but very late in your old old age!"
With Best Wishes,
